Whether its a beautifully controlled rendition of Swan Lake in front of an audience or a good old twerk to a bit of Nikki Minaj in your bedroom, there are so many reasons why Dance is good for you. You don’t have to be good at it to reap the benefits. You just have to go big or go home. Dance is an amazing combination of art and exercise, what’s not to love?
Here are some of the reasons you just gotta dance….
It’s an amazing workout
One of the most obvious reasons is that dancing is such great exercise. Dance is way harder than many people think, and it leaves you dripping in sweat, but it is SO much fun and leaves you feeling great and refreshed. None of your shoulder bopping though, you’ve got to commit!
It teaches you to never give up
Dance, much like anything in which practice makes perfect takes perseverance. You’ve got to get it wrong many many times before you get it right, but its totally worth it. If you dance competitively, or audition for shows, you also need to accept that you will fail many many times before you win or get cast. You’ve got to learn to remain hopeful, and hang on to that hope.
It helps you deal with stress
Dance is the best for stress. If you’re sad, angry or anxious, dance it away. Dance increases your confidence, and makes you feel free. It helps you to block out the world, and live in your own skin for a while
It helps you to express yourself
We aren’t all good with words, and sometimes we struggle to express how we feel. Dance is a great way to channel that energy into a performance and whatever you need to say, people will get it. Its a universal language, just like art and music.
You will make great friends.
Becoming part of a dance troupe is a great way to make lifelong friends, depending on how competitive you are, you will travel, compete and practice together, and that shared experience is very, very special. And if structured dance is not your thing, girls become life long friends on any dancefloor.
It encourages uniqueness
Dance is where those who are unique really shine. Some teenagers don’t want to blend in; they don’t want to follow the same path as the mainstream groups. Learning to dance can be the niche that helps to connect you to a community of your own.
So go on, get out those legwarmers, stick on some queen Bey, and give it socks…. x
