Have you watched everything on Netflix? Need a good book recommendation? We just finished “Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine” and we loved it! While it was released in 2017, we tend not to read new releases as they can be expensive, so we wait until the good ones become “vintage” and then we get stuck in.

Genuine question, how many times have you said “I’m fine” when the truth is you are a million miles away from fine. And how many times have you wondered why people just don’t get you, and why you don’t seem to fit in?

This, our friends, is the story of Eleanor’s life. Eleanor doesn’t think in the same way we do. She’s incredibly literal, and will always take words at face value, and she wondered why everyone else can’t do the same. She requires structure and routine, and as her story unfolds you can see why. She has experienced trauma, and has created a very small but lonely world for herself in order to survive.

As the book goes on, and you give her a chance, you begin to understand her, and when you understand her, you grow to love her, and it makes you wonder what would happen if you gave everyone in your world the same chance…..?

For me this book was a beautiful eye-opener. It was really inspiring and heartwarming to see one little act of kindness in someone’s life create a whole different world for that person. The book had an amazing storyline and delicate character development that was iconic. Through the whole novel we learned little by little everything about Eleanor and how alone and sad someone can be in contrast to her happiest moments with the other characters. It was a wonderful read, being mysterious and interesting throughout and it made me cherish everything I take for granted.

‘Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine’ is the worst title I have ever seen for a book. Honestly, I don’t know what the author was thinking when she came up with it. If I was to name this fantastic book I’d probably call it ‘Read It or Never Feel Whole’ or perhaps ‘This book is amazing with an engaging plot line and characters you can root for!’

Okay, so maybe not. When I started reading this book, it oddly reminded me of “The girl on the train”, it’s about a slightly strange and lonely woman living her life. So you can see where I’m coming from. However the difference between Eleanor and Rachel is that Eleanor improves. She becomes likeable and her story has depth. I do not want to spoil it on you but what I will say is this: no matter what kind of person you are; be it a sucker for romance or more of a superhero nerd, you will root for Eleanor. You will desperately want her to be happy. And as an aspiring writer, let me tell you, that is not an easy thing to achieve. In my opinion the best way to read this book is by a window when it’s raining, perhaps a hot chocolate with it as well? Although I suppose ANY book would be good if you did that…

I thoroughly enjoyed ‘Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine’. She was an incredibly likeable protagonist and you’re in her corner, rooting for her, the whole way through. She’s well developed and complex, and seeing her character development throughout was truly uplifting and heartwarming. It’s the kinda book you read in one sitting on a train and come out the other side with a spring in your step. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for a bit of change 🙂
