We’ve all seen the clip from Miss Congeniality where Gracie Harte played by Sandra Bullock takes us through the self-defence technique ‘SING’. (if you haven’t watch it here).Funny AND educational, we love it. But how important is it for young women to know a few self-defence moves?  According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violent, a woman is assaulted or beaten every nine seconds. As many as one in five women has been raped in their lifetimes, and 19.3 million women have been stalked. With these daunting statistics, it’s no wonder that self-defence for women has slowly crept into feature in the mainstream media.

The video we’ve linked below features Syaheenaz Halim, who is a jiu-jitsu blue belt under Bruno Barbosa and the founder of Malaysian Jiujiteras. The video was organised by the HER Network which is a cool online community that brings together ‘strong, passionate and like-minded women.’ The platform aims to help guide women through health and fitness content so that they can become the best versions of themselves. This video focuses on self-defence and how to evade an attacker.

What we liked about this video is that it does not promote violence or revenge on the attacker. It simply shows us effective ways to get out of a situation and run for help. We think these tips are super helpful and highlight some weak points in the body that can help us defend ourselves. The key idea here is to not panic and to use our own strengths and skills to help defend ourselves.

We hope you never need to apply any of these tools, but please watch it, and share with your friends x
