Very rarely do you check in to a Kardashian’s Instastory and not see a Rumi quote. No matter your mood, Rumi has a handy phrase to help you express it through the medium of social  media. But who is Rumi anyway?

In the 13th century, Rumi was a wealthy nobleman and scholar, until he met a travelling monk called Shams Al Tabriz. They connected over a love of theological chats and flowery words and spent 3 months locked in Rumi’s house firing ideas and theories around. Rumi developed a passion for love (same) and spent the rest of  his life trying to instil, through his poetry, a similiar passion and universal understanding of the power of love in others.

His poems speak to all of us, because, at the end of the day, all we desire is to love and be loved.
Here are ten of our favourite quotes.
