When you don’t have the words to explain how you feel, when you are alone, when you feel like nobody understands…… Music is the go to for so many of us who are going through a hard time, playing it or listening to it, you will always find a musician, singer, or songwriter who once stood (and maybe still stands) in your shoes. Wearing headphones is a great way to block out the world, when you’re in a public place and want to be left alone, when you need to block out the noise, or when you’re lying alone in bed trying to sleep.

Here are some great songs about anxiety or depression, and that will remind you that, at the very least, you are not alone. We have put them all into a Youtube playlist for you also, which you can access here…

“Mad Hatter” — Melanie Martinez

Doctor, doctor please listen / My brain is scattered / You can be Alice / I’ll be the mad hatter

“Unwell” — Matchbox Twenty

All day staring at the ceiling/ Making friends with shadows on my wall / All night hearing voices telling me / That I should get some sleep / Because tomorrow might be good for something

“Warrior” — Demi Lovato

All the pain and the truth / I wear like a battle wound / So ashamed, so confused / I was broken and bruised

“Breathe Me” — Sia

Ouch, I have lost myself again / Lost myself and I am nowhere to be found / Yeah I think that I might break / Lost myself again, and I feel unsafe.

“Shake It Out” — Florence + The Machine

Regrets collect like old friends / Here to relive your darkest moments / I can see no way, I can see no way / And all of the ghouls come out to play

“Spirits” — The Strumbellas

I got guns in my head and they won’t go / Spirits in my head and they won’t go

“Eet” — Regina Spektor

It’s like forgetting the words to your favorite song / You can’t believe it / You were always singing along / It was so easy and the words so sweet / You can’t remember / You try to feel the beat

“They Know My Name” – Big Little Lions

“These monsters are hiding within my brain / They roar and they shout / and they know my name

“Gasoline” – Halsey

I think there’s a flaw in my code / These voices won’t leave me alone / Well my heart is gold and my hands are cold

“Mad World” — Gary Jules

And I find it kinda funny, I find it kinda sad / The dreams in which I’m dying are the best I’ve ever had / I find it hard to tell you, I find it hard to take / When people run in circles it’s a very very / mad world mad world

 “A Better Son/Daughter” – by Rilo Kiley

When you’re on, you’re really f***ing on / And your friends they sing along and they love you / But the lows are so extreme that the good seems f***ing cheap and it teases you for weeks in its absence/ But you’ll fight and you’ll make it through.

“Amsterdam” – by Coldplay

Time is on your side, it’s on your side, now/ Not pushing you down, and all around/ No it’s no cause for concern / Stuck on the end of this ball and chain / And I’m on my way back down again.

“After the Storm” – by Mumford & Sons

Night has always pushed up day/ You must know life to see decay/ But I won’t rot, I won’t rot/ Not this mind and not this heart, I won’t rot/ And I took you by the hand / And we stood tall, and remembered our own land, what we lived for.

“Heal” – by Tom Odell

Take my mind and take my pain, like an empty bottle takes the rain / And heal / And take my past and take my sins, like an empty sail takes the wind / And heal.”

“Emphasis” – by Sleeping At Last

The smartest thing I’ve ever learned is that I don’t have all the answers/  just a little light to call my own / Though it pales in comparison to the overarching shadows /a speck of light can reignite the sun and swallow darkness whole

“Elephant In The Room” – by Richard Walters

And I hope you can see, I’m more than this, this heap at your feet / Who are you to judge me? Who are you to preach? Control has slipped away from me again/ Forcing you to speak / Snapping out my voice seems smaller now, it’s only whispering my life

“The A Team” – by Ed Sheeran

Stuck in her daydream /Been this way since eighteen / But lately her face seems slowly sinking, wasting / Crumbling like pastries and they scream / the worst things in life come free to us

‘Happy Little Pill’  – Troye Sivan
“My happy little pill / Take me away / Dry my eyes / Bring colour to my skies”

“Obsessions” – Mariana And The Diamonds

We’ve got obsessions / I want to erase every nasty thought / That bugs me every day of every week

‘Only You’ – Selena Gomez

This is going to take a long time / And I wonder what’s mine / Can’t take no more / Wonder if you’ll understand / It’s just the touch of your hand / Behind a closed door

If you have a “go to” song, please send it to us, and we’ll add it…
