bad mood

We all have bad days, you woke up happy and then a couple of things happen one after another and all of a sudden your mood has taken a turn for the worse. The milk was off in your coco-pops, the bus was late and you left your homework on the kitchen table.

Firstly, we need to remember that there’s a big difference between a bad mood and a bout of depression. If you find yourself wanting to punch everyone in the face today, it’s not them hun, it’s totally you.

You can take control of a mood, and take some steps to feel better. Whatever you do, do something, because your thoughts have a snowball effect and will lead to more and more negativity, making your brain a not-very-fun place to be.

Secondly, be aware of how you feel, and own it. You can go through the day being irritated at everyone who smiles at you, or you can get some perspective. There is good and bad in every day, you just need to place your attention and focus on the good.

Here are five tricks that may help you to snap out of that funk, for the love of humanity…

1. Close your eyes, take a deep breath, and think of 3 things you are grateful for.

It sounds like such a simple and obvious thing, but it works, and you can do it anywhere, at any time. Try to see the things that make you happy in your mind, especially people who always make you smile. You can usually feel a shift immediately, and we promise that a smile will invade your face, in spite of your honkin’ humour, and you will light up like a Christmas tree.

2. Ask yourself, “How does this serve me?”

Girl, the only person who’s hurtin’ here is you. And maybe the old lady sitting across from you on the bus who’s wondering why you’ve chosen to scowl and her specifically. Remember, there is good in every situation, even the worst of the worst days. Focus on finding it, and you will, at the very least, distract yourself for a good ten minutes.

3. Turn on a “feel good” song

Music is everything. The best songs can turn your frown upside down in seconds. Whether you choose to play the latest Dua Lipa or the songs you would dance around the living room to as a kid, turn it up loud, and move. It is a scientific impossibility to stay grouchy, trust us, we’ve done the research.

4. Go and work out.

We’ve said this so many times we’re giving ourselves a headache. Working out, in whatever form you choose, from walking to skydiving, will kick-start your energy levels, and distract you from whatever your mind is fixating on. You are only ever one workout away from a good mood. And you could even combine it with number 3 above for extra effect. Get those endorphins flowing!

5. Give to someone, unconditionally

There is no feeling in life better than giving, whether it’s time, love, attention, money or compliments it’s a game-changer in terms of the feel-good factor. When you give to another person expecting nothing in return, it makes you grateful for all that you have, and all that you usually take for granted.

Our Closing Arguments:

Again, can we remind you that bad moods, cranks, and grumps and different to depression and other mental health issues? None of these tips are new or groundbreaking, but we all need a reminder every now and again that it’s the simple things that can sometimes make all the difference.

All of these are habits we should be trying to do more of regardless of mood, start the day with a tuuuuune, and get some movement into your routine. Easy Peasy Lemons Chill.
