Yesterday, the world came together to celebrate International Women’s Day, and this year’s theme — Accelerate Action — couldn’t feel more urgent or more inspiring. But now that the day is over, the real question is: what’s next?

We know a lot of you might feel like these big global movements are something for adults, politicians, or celebrities to handle. But here’s the truth — teenage girls have always been at the heart of real change. Your voices, your ideas, your actions — they all matter, and they can accelerate action faster than you might think.

How does the 'Accelerate Action' campaign theme provide a timely focus for IWD 2025?

So, what does Accelerate Action actually mean?

It’s all about speeding up progress towards gender equality, fairness, and opportunity for women and girls everywhere. And the best part? You don’t need a fancy job title, a million followers, or a seat in parliament to make a difference. Here are some ways you can start taking action right now:

1. Start Conversations That Matter

You don’t need to organise a massive protest to make noise — change starts with conversations. Whether it’s calling out a sexist joke, asking your school to celebrate female role models in class, or even chatting to your younger siblings about why equality matters — every conversation accelerates awareness and understanding.

💬 Action: Challenge casual sexism when you hear it — at home, in school, online. Your voice has power.

2. Use Your Social Media for Good

You’re already online, so why not use your platform to raise awareness about issues you care about? From period poverty to education rights, there are so many campaigns that could use your voice. Post about inspiring women, share petitions, or create TikToks educating others.

📲 Action: Share, tag, and spread the word. Your followers will listen.

3. Support Your Sisters

Girls supporting girls — it’s not just a hashtag, it’s a movement. Look around your school or community. Is there a girl who’s being left out, underestimated, or talked down to? Be the one who stands beside her. When girls have each other’s backs, we’re unstoppable.

🤝 Action: Hype up other girls, call out unfair treatment, and lift each other up.

4. Get Involved in Something Bigger

Whether it’s joining your student council, volunteering with a local charity, or even starting your own campaign — small actions add up. If there’s something you care about (mental health, gender stereotypes in sport, access to period products), be the one to push for change.

⚡ Action: Find a cause, take a step, make noise.

5. Own Your Power — Even When It’s Scary

We get it — speaking up isn’t always easy. Sometimes you’ll feel too young, too inexperienced, or too scared of being judged. But accelerating action means being brave enough to show up, even when your voice shakes. The more you practice using your voice, the easier it gets.

💪 Action: Next time you feel like staying quiet, push yourself to speak up — even just once. It adds up.

One Day Isn’t Enough — But You Are

International Women’s Day is an incredible moment to celebrate progress and spark action — but one day isn’t enough to change the world. Real change happens the other 364 days of the year, when girls like you decide to step up, speak out, and accelerate action in your own way.

So today, the day after IWD, ask yourself:
What’s one small action I can take today to accelerate change for girls like me — and the girls who will come after me?

Whatever you choose to do, know this: you’re not too young to make a difference — you’re the perfect age to start. 🚀
