Let’s face it: we’re all just trying to figure life out. Questions like “What do I want to do?”, “What course should I apply for?”, or even “What kind of life do I want?” are on repeat in our minds—especially as we try to plan our future.
It’s easy to get caught up in chasing the right answers or trying to tick off society’s checklist: Get the grades. Get the job. Get the stuff. But what if we told you that you’ve been thinking about it all backwards?
We’ve been reflecting on how we approach life’s big questions—and we think it’s time to flip the script.
First of All: Stop Obsessing Over End Results
We get it—everyone wants to see results. Good grades, dream job, happy relationships. But here’s the thing: when you focus only on the outcome, the moment you get there, it rarely feels as amazing as you expected. You move the goalposts, and the chase starts all over again.
Instead, what if you shifted the focus inward? What if, instead of asking “What do I want to HAVE?”, you asked “Who do I want to BE?”
That’s where the magic happens. That’s where you’ll find real growth, self-worth, and, yep—actual happiness.
Try This: The BE → DO → HAVE Mindset
Let’s break it down. Every one of us has:
-
Things we want to HAVE (money, success, relationships)
-
Things we want to DO (travel, create, build a career)
-
And the kind of person we want to BE (confident, kind, fulfilled)
But here’s the problem: society usually gets the order completely wrong.
We’re told:
👉 Get the grades, the job, the relationship (HAVE)
👉 So you can travel, work your dream job, do fun things (DO)
👉 Then you’ll be a happy, confident person (BE)
That might sound logical, but it’s actually backwards.
Flip It: Start With WHO You Want to Be
Here’s the real formula:
BE → DO → HAVE
Start with who you want to be.
Be kind. Be focused. Be resilient. Be confident. Be curious.
Be someone who shows up for themselves. Someone who’s open to growth.
Be someone who believes they’re enough right now—not just when they achieve something big.
When you start with who you are, you naturally start doing things that align with that person. You chase the dreams that matter to you. You take better care of yourself. You build stronger connections.
And eventually, you start to HAVE the things you wanted all along—without losing yourself in the process.
So… Who Do You Want to BE?
It’s easy to look around and feel like you’re behind or not doing enough. But the truth is: becoming the person you want to be is the most powerful thing you can do.
So ask yourself:
-
What kind of friend do I want to be?
-
What values do I care about?
-
What habits and beliefs support the life I want?
Focus on you. Your character. Your growth. Your story.
Because that’s where everything else begins.
Want a life that feels good, not just looks good? Start with being.
Work on yourself. Nurture your mind. Own your voice.
And trust that the rest will follow.
You’ve got this 💫
