We are still wondering if it was a dream! 🤩 Team Shona attended an all-day event hosted by Jacqueline Kyne Events where we got to hear from a Dr. Gabor Maté and a host of other wonderful speakers including Dennis Okwera from Lumule Foundation, Bressie from A Lust For LifeBrent Pope from Elephant in the Room Movement and our very own fearless leader, Tammy.

It was a huge honour to be included in this amazing event. Tough but real conversations were had about youth mental health but it felt like a safe space and hopefully, everyone left with the idea of how to create change in whatever way they can.

World-renowned Trauma and Mental Health expert Dr Gabor Maté addresses Irish audience in exploring “The Myth of Normal”

Dublin, 20th June 2024 – World-renowned author and expert on childhood development, trauma and mental health, Dr. Gabor Maté today led a unique immersive event at the RDS in Dublin to inspire healing, connection and collaboration. Dr. Maté, who is a Canadian-Hungarian physician, an internationally renowned speaker, is also highly sought after for his expertise on addiction, trauma, childhood development, and the relationship between stress and illness. The New York Times best-selling author, with several books published in almost 40 languages, today shared profound insights from his groundbreaking book, “The Myth of Normal: Trauma, Illness; Healing in a Toxic Culture.” Having experienced trauma and addiction in his own life, Dr Maté challenges conventional perspectives in Western medicine, unravels the intricate connections between chronic illness, the mind-body relationship, and societal influences on health.

As part of this immersive charity event, organised by well-being specialist Jacqueline Kyne, Newstalk’s Clare McKenna hosted a panel discussion on the mental health challenges facing Ireland’s youth and opportunities for future collaboration. In addition to Dr Gabor Maté, the panel also featured Niall Breslin, founder of Lust for Life and the “Where is My Mind” podcast in addition to Tammy Darcy, CEO of The Shona Project and Brent Pope, Co-Creator of the Elephant in the Room project.

Other featured speakers included model and actor Dennis Okwera, founder of the Lumule Foundation, who shared his remarkable story, from escaping his war-torn community in Northern Uganda to now returning re-building that community. All proceeds from the event will go to the Lumule Foundation and HUGG, Ireland’s national suicide bereavement charity.
