This is week 5, our final week, of our Women in STEM careers series in collaboration with Shorla Oncology, where we introduce you to inspiring women making strides in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. This week, meet Dominika, a dedicated professional at Shorla Oncology:

pharmaceutical-science-journey

My name is Dominika Surdyk. I was born and raised in the North-West part of Poland, in the beautiful city of Szczecin. I went to college there and completed a degree in Chemical Engineering. I have a lot of hobbies, but one of them is important to me and it’s my hobby from childhood – I spend free time drawing and painting, which makes me happy and relaxed. I also like outdoor cycling and do love swimming! I’m sharing my passions with my son – Samuel (10). However, he has one hobby I would be afraid of – BJJ (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu), but I promised him I will consider this activity in the future 😊

My Role as Analytical Manager at Shorla Pharma

I currently work as an Analytical Manager in Shorla Pharma, but before I joined Shorla, I spent many years working in other pharmaceutical companies. I went to college at the University of Technology in Szczecin and studied Chemical Engineering. The first 2 years after college, I worked in a chemical manufacturing company in Poland. However, I wanted to change the environment, to challenge myself, and to see if I was able to work in a different country. The idea was born in my head, and I started to look for a job abroad. After about 2 months, I landed at Shannon airport. My plan was to stay in Ireland for two years, but now I’m here nearly 18 years!

A Journey Through the Pharmaceutical Industry

Over the last 18 years, I have worked in a number of pharmaceutical companies as a scientist, leading different projects (both small molecules and large molecules), but the goal was always the same – to support the development and successful approval of the medicine. The core of the job of the scientist in the analytical department is to make sure that the methods used for testing the product (from the early development stage through the release and stability of the product) are robust and validated, to ensure that the medicine is safe and of good quality.

The most enjoyable part of my job is when the medicine is approved and on the way to the patients. In that moment, I feel proud of myself and Shorla’s team.

My Advice for Aspiring Scientists

I think science is contagious. I experienced it during last year’s science week—I was preparing a couple of experiments for young students in one of the primary schools back in November 2023. I was amazed by the level of engagement (as you can see in the picture)!

What I have learned through the years and what I would like to share with you is that success does not come easy (well 😊 not always). It takes hard work and commitment and very often requires stepping outside of the comfort zone, being more in the growth zone, but it always pays off! A career in science is rewarding and has many advantages!

Are you inspired by Dominika’s story? Over the past 5 weeks we have shared 5 individual stories from inspiring women on the Shorla Oncology team, so if you haven’t already, you can check out all of their stories here!  Let us know if this is inspiring you to consider exploring your own path in science and technology! x
