For many of us, curling up with a good book is our idea of heaven. Books are an escape FROM the world, and a bridge TO the world, all at the same time. We’re delighted to be working with The Book Centre to keep you informed on the best books to read for every mood and occasion, whether you want to stay more informed about current issues, feel more empowered as a woman, or just visit a world vastly different to your own. This article focuses on some of the best books to keep us off our phone screens, and because our pals at The Book Centre are the soundest, they are giving you a chance to win a copy of all the books mentioned in this article! Keep an eye on our socials over the next few days to see how you can win them. But for now, it’s over to Amy…
We are all guilty of spending a lot of time on our phones, adults and teenagers alike. Too much screentime can be detrimental to our mental health for many different reasons. The books below are not meant to be preachy, I promise! They merely highlight ways we can spend less time on a screen and more time hanging out with friends and family and chatting in person!
Why Your Parents Are Hung Up On Your Phone is a brilliant book that explains in an easy to understand manner how conflict arises between parents and young people over phone usage. With lots of really interesting facts about screen time and how it affects our brains, this is a great read!
If you are a very hands on person and love creating and journalling, The Teenage Guide to Digital Wellbeing is just the book for you. It is a fantastic book that gives you the tools to create a balance between being on your phone and social media and taking breaks when you need them.
How To Say No To Your Phone has lots of facts and figures which helps its readers to have a firm relationship with your phone. This is the ideal book if you feel you are addicted to your phone and need help to start to detach yourself and create positive habits.
Social Media Survival Guide is probably my favourite book about social media. It has so much information on influencers, horrible comments we see online and most importantly, staying safe on social media. This is a must read for every teenager as it will help you to navigate the internet safely.
My main takeaway from all of these books is that your friends will always be there, you are not missing out by setting boundaries for yourself with your phone and social media. My challenge for you all: put all of the household phones in a lockbox for a while every evening and see how many lovely conversations you have!
